As told by Abishag France
Angeline van Heyningen born Artsen, I call her Mommy. She is, in one word, selfless. She's always made sure her family has what they need and want even if she doesn't get anything in return.
She would speak in St. Martin English when she is angry. When I was about 7 or 8 years old, I asked her for money. I went up the road to a store and bought her a vase for her birthday. It made her so happy. It was my first gift to her and she still has to this day. That's over 20 years ago!
I admire her strength. No matter how tired she seems, she can always go another mile. I can't even say that for myself. There hasn't been a more outspoken woman in this world besides Mommy. I've learnt to speak my mind all the time no matter the person or situation. Sometimes it's best to be quiet, but others tend to be more careful around you when they know what you're about.
She stayed at home when we were kids. In our high school stage, she went into the workforce full time. I learnt that women don't necessarily have to be housewives all their lives. It was best for me and my siblings to be cared for by Mommy (and papa) instead of some babysitter or one parent. Having both parents full time was daunting at the time but looking back, it was the best thing ever.
Mommy's not much of a community person. She's more a family woman.
My father is her inspiration. No matter what she does or wants to do, he's her biggest fan and supporter. His opinions and point of views on anything matters greatly to her. When I was abroad studying, Mommy was always been there for me. She’s taught me that education is everything. My love for her insurmountable. She will always be the first lady in my life no matter where I go or what I do. I am who I am today because of her. And I love her for it no matter what. There's no one in the world like Mommy.
